Abstract
Articles of refractory metals or alloys, or of compositions containing substantial proportions of carbide, boride, or nitrude, particularly hollow articles, are made by adding to the powdered constituents an electrolyte in sufficient quantity to produce a pourable mixture, pouring such mixture into an absorbent mould, drying the moulded article, and finally highly sintering it. The materials used may be metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, or tantalum, or carbides, borides, nitrides or double compounds of metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, or titanium along with one or more metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, or tantalum. The electrolyte used may be water or a salt solution, and a binder may be used which may be a metal or an organic binder such as dextrin or rubber, or an inorganic binder such as lime. The moulds are preferably made of gypsum. In a specific example the mixture to be moulded is made from 80 per cent of tungsten carbide, 10 per cent of titanium carbide, and 10 per cent of cobalt along with cobalt nitrate solution and glycerine.
