Abstract
Shaped articles such as tools or tool parts are made by mixing one or more carbides of one or more metals of the fourth and sixth groups, particularly silicon, titanium, zirconium, molybdenum, and tungsten, with one or more auxiliary metals of the iron group, with or without a metal or metals of the eighth group, particularly chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, adding glycerin or glycols, preliminarily shaping the mixture, allowing it to dry or harden, expelling at about 100-200 DEG C. if necessary any excess reagent, finally shaping the article by mechanical treatment, and heating it at over 1100 DEG C., particularly at about 1450 DEG C. Specific examples of the following compositions are given: molybdenum carbide, titanium carbide, nickel, and chromium; titanium carbide, nickel, and chromium; the molybdenum carbide or titanium carbide being in each case replaceable by zirconium carbide.
