[Class 17 (i)] Treeing and ironing.-A tree for use in shoe treeing and ironing machines has an exchangeable forepart, expansible side portions, and a universal heel part having a rigid central portion and expansible side pieces hinged to it about axes substantially coincident with the side surfaces of the heel and inclined upwardly and forwardly from the foot bottom near the rear of the heel towards the ankle portion. To facilitate insertion into and removal from the shoe, the forepart 50 is movable to beyond the heel and body parts in the manner described in Specification 6710/85, [Class 17], a crossbar on the forepart engaging a notch 60 in a slide 52 normally retained in operative position by a latch 70, the forepart being retained on the slide by a latch 66. The tree has the usual expanding slide 76 urged to the contracting position by a spring 24 and pulled to the right for expansion of the tree by a treadle on the treeing machine, as described in Specification 7974/90, [Class 17]. The slide has a cam surface 78 which normally engages a tail 82 on the latch 70 to maintain the latch in its locking position, and frees the latch by engaging a lug 80 thereon when allowed to move to the left. Cams 110 on the slide 76 engage rollers 114 to expand the tree. The larger sizes of foreparts carry pins or wedges 104 to engage between a central body portion 54 and expansible side members 84, 86 carried by strips 90 secured to the tree leg. The lower ends of the side members are guided by a plate 96 engaging slots in the side members. The heel part has expansible side portions 130 tiltable about ribs 134 having their inner faces curved about a division line 132, this construction causing the blocks to move substantially about the line 132. The blocks are secured to thin metal plates 152 carried by the heel part and overlapping the side portions 84, 86, and are provided with guide slots engaging arms on plates carrying the rollers 114. A tree having a universal heel part may be used as a tree of which the forepart is the forepart of a last on which the shoe is made as described in Specification 420,608.
