Abstract
426,070. Felting, watermarking, and colouring paper pulp. MELVIN, T. S. F., 4, Ross Gardens, Edinburgh. Dec. 5, 1933, Nos. 34112/33 and 34759/34. [Class 96] Felting together of fibres on a Fourdrinier or like paper making machine is aided by rotary discs a &c., concentric with, and at an angle, e.g. of 70‹ with a shaft c so that the lower parts of the discs move in the pulp stream, where the pulp is sufficiently drained to retain deflections imparted thereto, but not so drained that an uneven surface results. The discs a are secured to bosses b which slide on the shaft c, and lock against adjacent discs, e.g. by projections, fitting recesses as shown at b<2>, or at f, or by pins e &c., or the bosses may be splined to the shaft. All discs, or alternate discs, or every third, fourth, fifth, sixth, &c., disc may be parallel. The bearings of the shaft c are adjustable vertically, or longitudinally of the machine. The discs may be used in place of the dandy roll with the edges touching the pulp, to produce a watermark effect. To produce variegated paper, colour may be fed from a trough or troughs, e.g. by a brass roller, to a cloth the opposite side of which trails rearwardly over the discs a.
