Abstract

425,040. Winding yarns. LEEDHAM, L. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd., Adelaide Works, Leicester. Sept. 1, 1933, No. 24355. [Class 120 (ii)] In order to reduce vibration and to ensure steadier running, the winding-spindles of a yarn-winding machine are arranged in two or more sets and each set is provided with independent mechanism for reciprocating the riser spindles thereof and with independent variable-speed mechanism for driving the winding spindles and the variable-speed mechanisms comprise coaxially-disposed friction wheels driving a friction wheel for each winding spindle with all the driven friction wheels disposed on one and the same side of the axis of the driving wheels. As shown the spindles are arranged in two sets and the constantly-driven main driving shaft 13 drives the independent coaxial friction wheel shafts 19, 119 through chain and sprocket gearing, the shafts 19, 119 being reciprocated to produce the speed variations in the winding-spindles 22 by helical cams 29, 129 on a cam shaft 14 geared to the shaft 13, the cams engaging followers at one end of pivoted levers which at the other end engage studs projecting from sleeves 36 mounted freely on the shafts 19, 119 between collars 37 fixed thereto ; the cams are set relatively to one another to give any desired control of the friction-wheel shafts 19, 119. Each riser spindle 49 is carried from a rod 44 which is reciprocated by a lever 38 fixed to a rock-shaft individual to the set and the rock-shafts, 41, 141, are actuated by separate cams 39, 139 engaging arms 40 fixed to the shafts, the cams being mounted on the shaft 14 in angular positions corresponding to the setting of the cams 29, 129. The riser mechanism for the spindle 49 may be that described in Specification 324,292, [Class 120 (ii)], 409,285, or 424,973. The driven friction wheels 23 of the spindles 22 are splined thereon and are forced by springs 24 into engagement with the driving wheels 21, 121 on the shafts 19, 119 respectively and the slow start mechanism described in Specification 413,037 may be associated with these shafts.
