Be it known thatl, ALONZO E. RHoAnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of l-lopedale, county of Worcester, State of -Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Spoolers for Winding Spools of Different Lengths, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. e
This invention relates to improvements in spoolers and the general object of the invention is to provide a spooler adaptable to wind spools of different lengths simultaneously.
Usual spool carriers comprise a frame having a series or a plurality of series of spoolcarriers with means for rotating said spool carriers uniformly and a traverse rod havingv guides cooperating with the respective spools of a series. Such spoolers are capable of winding only spools of the same uniform length and when spools of other lengths are to be wound it is necessary toV reorganize the entire spooler in order to wind properly the spools of the desired length. Where small orders are received for spools which are of different lengths from the spools for which the machine is adapted such reorganization of the spooler is very lmrdensome.
The principal object of the present invention therefore is to provide a spooler which may be of any desired size and which issov constructed that one or more sections of it may be readily adapted to wind spools of different lengths thanthose of the other section or sections without interfering with the winding of theregular spools upon such other section or sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spooler having a series of rotatable spool carriers and means for imparting uniform rotation to all of said spool carriers with a plurality of traverse rods each operated by a separate and independent traverse mechanism comprising changeable, preferably replaceable, means for correlating the movement of the traverse rod to the speed of rotation of the spool and the lengthof the spool in order that spools of different lengths may be properly wound' simule taneously upon the spooler.
A further object of the invention s to provide a device of this character with a common means for actuating all of the traverse mechanisms.
A further object of the invention is toy provide a traverse motion shaft for actuating the severa-l traverse mechanisms with means for preventing breakage of the traverse motion mechanisms if the same are improperly arrested.
Other objects and features of the inven- `tion will more fully appear from the follow- -ing description and the accompanying drawings and will be particularly pointed `out in the claims.

Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of a portion of the spooler embodying the invention showing the particular and preferred form of traverse mechanism and means for actu ating the same.
The spooler as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings comprises a frame which is shown as formed in sections, each section comprising a plurality of supporting uprights or samsons 1 connected by longitudinally extending beams 2 and connecting rods 3 which desirably extend throughout the series of the sections of the frame. The longitudinal members. of the frame are connected by suitable cross struts 4 which preferably are formed integral with the uprights. All of these members may be of any suitable and desired form. Horizontal spindle rails 5 are formed upon or secured to the upper edges of the longitudinal beams 4l and a. series of rotatable spindles 6 is mounted upon each of the spindle rails. Each spindle is provided with a whirl 7' which is driven by a suitable belt. (not shown) from a drum 8 which is mounted upon the main shaft 9 which extends longitudinally of the frame and is actuated in any suitable manner as through fast and loose pulleys l0 and 1l. f
The spools are mounted upon the spindles and the yarn is supplied to each spool from lll bracket 8G so that theshaiit of the idle gear maybe properly secured to the bracket to cause the teeth of the gear to mesh with 'the teeth of the gear upon the traverse motion shaft and also with the gear 4l which is secured to the cam.
In Fig. 2 the gear 47 is shown in full lines as meshing` with the gear 45 and in dotted vWorm 5l mounted upon a shaft 52 which is journalled in a bracket secured to the upright l. A bevelled gear i4 is `formed integral with or secured to the Worm gear 5l and is engaged by a complementary bevelled gear which is rotatably mounted upon a eountershaft 56 which is driven by a sprocketV wheel 57 and sprocket chain from a sprocket Wheel 59 upon the main shaft 9.
`By reason oli the construction thus described the traverse motion shaft 44 is given a positive rotation and cannot slip or yield to any stoppage of the traverse mechanism.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing means which will permit the slippage of the driving mechanism of the respective traverse motions 'to prevent breakage of the traverse mechanism or other parts. 4This is accomplished in the present invention by rotatably mounting the gear 45 upon the traverse motion shatt 44 and providing a suitable clutch mechanism which will normally cause rotation ot the gear with the sha'lt. but which upon arrest of the traverse mechanism will permit a slippage of the gear upon the shaft.
ln the particular embodiment ot the invention disclosedherein the hub of the gear 45 is provided With a circular series oi iishaped teeth adapted to engage complen'ientary teeth upon collar 60 which is secured to the traverse motion shaft. The teeth of the gear hub and collar are normally held in engagement by a heavy helical spring 6l which surrounds the shaft 44 and abuts at one end against the hub oft the Vgear 45 and at its opposite end against a collar 62 `which is iXedly secured to the shaft as by a pin 63. v
ln the operation' of the machine above described each of the traverse rods is reciprocated by its separate traverse mechanism all el the traverse mechanisms being actuated from the traverse motion rshaft which extends throughout the length of the machine. lV hen it is desired to Wind spools ot equal length identical cams and cam gears are appliedto the stud shafts 46 carried by the respective uprights which desirably are located at the ends or' the sections 'olf Vthe frame containing the respective groups of spindles with which the several traverse rods co-operate. 1When itis desired to Wind a relatively small number of spools of different lengths than those Jfor which the machine is thus equipped one or more of the cams and attached cam gears can he readily removed from its stud shaft and replaced by a different cam with its attached gear which will correlate the reciprocating movement oit the traverse rod to the speed oi rotation oit' the spools and the length oi the spools with which such traverse rod cri-operates.

Furthermore by reason of this construction the entire machine can be readily adapted to wind spools of any desired length by merely using` such cams and their attached gears as are required to impart the proper motion to the traverse rods.
