[Class 100 (ii)] Platen machines; printing on curved surfaces.- A device for stamping articles such as labels on bottles comprises means to permit the device to be fixed to a support, for example, a shop counter, and a stamp which is movable from an inoperative position to a stamping position solely by pressure exerted on the article to be stamped ; the pressure on the article may effect relative movement between the stamp and an inking pad or roller normally in contact therewith. In one form, a handstamp of the self-inking turnover type is attached to brackets 10 whereby it may be fixed to a support 11 so that the stamp is vertical. A bottle 25 to be stamped is pressed against a yoke 16 having side members 19, 20 cut away at 26 to suit the contour of the bottle, and a stamp 15 pivoted at 14 to the main frame of the stamp and normally resting against an ink-pad 18 is turned over into stamping position owing to the engagement of pins 22 with cam slots 23 in lugs 24 on the stamp. To facilitate inking the pad 18, a catch may be provided for holding the stamp in a position other than the normal position. In another form, (not shown), an inking- roller normally in contact with a stationary stamp is moved across the face of the stamp and an ink-pad by pressure against a spring controlled buffer, and in a modification, Fig. 5, (not shown), the stamp when in an intermediate position wipes over an inking-roller in contact with an ink-pad. Printing-surfaces,-The stamp consists of a rubber strip 34 stretched across a concave base to permit the stamp to accommodate itself to bottles of different diameters.
