rihis invention relatesto stamping devices for printing names and addresses or other indicia on sales slips or the like, the subject matterof the invention resembling in general the printing device described in my cepending application Serial No. 359,816, tiled May 2, 1929, but presenting various improvements upon the same. The machines described in my above identified application each included a casing having an open bottom with a plate holder pivoted thereto to swing from an open to a closed position against the casing, a roller carriage reciprocable above the opening and having parallel rollers at the bottom thereof, an inking ribbon and an operating handle associated with mechanism within the case for reciprocating the roller carriage and feeding the ribbon past the same. Such devices are particularly adapted for use in department stores or other .retail establishments for printing the names and addresses of-customoers upon duplicate sales slips, in order to avoid the mistakes frequently made due to the illegible and inaccurate Writing of the names and addresses. rThe printing plate which bears said indicia may be in convenient form to be carried by the customer as suggested in the above-identified application, and as more fully described in another oi' my copending applications, Serial N. 374,715 filed June 29, 1929, and the plate may be used as means'for identifying a customer Who is entitled to credit.. In use of the apparatus of this character, the plate is applied to its holder With the usual intervening carbon sheets inserted between the printed surface ct the plate and the ribbon. The handle is then operated to cause the impression ofthe indicia carried by the plate upon the sales slips.
The present invention aiords an improved device of this character which is particularly characterized by an arrangement permitting the use of a single impression element or 4roller which is movable from one side or end of the casing to theother. The use of a single roller is advantageous since it permits the even printing of all portionso the sales slip upon'which the indicia carried by the plate is impressed, thus avoiding the heavier printing of the intermediate portion of the same as often may be the case When a plurality of rollers move over the plate, and a larger number of rollers passing over the intermediate portion of the same than over the ends thereof. Furthermore, the present invention pro` vides an improved guide for the single roller which prevents undue friction and Wear.
This invention also affords an improved estructural arrangement of the plunger guide assembly and related parts. For this purpose a tubular guide sleeve extends-through the upper part of the casing, receiving a tubular plunger, the upper end of the latter being connected to a pivotally mountedhandle. The guide sleeve is held in place by a nut which clamps a handle supporting bracket in place, and this sleeve also receives a second nut which supports a part of the operating mechanism of the device. A locking pin holds the second nut properly positioned in relation to the mechanism and extends through slots in the tubular plunger, the ends of these slots may substantially limit the movement of the plunger in each direction; this locking pin is also effective in supporting a coil spring that is disposed Within the plunger and serves normally to urge the plunger and handle outwardly in relation to the casing. In general, the present invention provides a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive, and which may be operated Without need for skilled attentionl and which is durable and dependable in use.

A tubular plunger 22 slides in a vertically disposed guide sleeve 23 which has a depending threaded portion 23 extending into the upper part of casing 11. YA handle 25 is pivotally connected to a bracket 80 which is secured between a shoulder portion 23b of the member 23 and the top of the casing. A slot 62 in the handle receives a transverse pin 27 carried by the upper part of the plunger 22, the handle 25 extending through suitable aligned slots in the upper part of member 23 Iand in plunger. 22. A spring 63 is disposed within the latter with its iower end resting upon a pin 30 which locks a nut 29 upon the lower end of the extension 23a of guidemember 23. Pin 30 extends through slots 64 in the wall of the plunger, and the upper and lwer ends of these slots may coolperate with the locking pin in limiting t extent of the vert-ical movement of the plunger. A suitable retaining nut holds the tubular member 23 in place, and clamps the bracket against the top of the casing.
An integral extension or lug 31 upon the nut 29 is connected by a pivot pin 32 with a swinging fork member 33. The lower end of this fork has parallel portions 35 with slots 36 slidably engaging thereduced end portions 39 of the printing roller 20. A tension spring 43 is connected to a sheet metal arm 45 that is welded or otherwise secured to` lower end of the plunger, sothat the forkswings about pin 32 when the cam moves in relation to the follower.

Suitable actuating mechanism for feeding the ribbon in response to the reciprocation of the plunger 22 and for reversing the direction of feeding movement may be provided as fully described, in my copending application 359,816,V such mechanism not being essential positioned over the printing plate before the Vsame is swung into juxtaposition with the bottom of the casing. When the parts are thus brought into juxtaposition, the handle 25 is depressed to cause the roller 20 to move back and forth across the sheets or upon the intervening ink ribbon R and/or aLsuitable carbon sheet. Ordinarily, a complete reciprocation of the roller will suffice to print It will-be understood that the upper sheet may be printed by the inked ribbon and that any reasonable number of intervening sheets lmay be printed by inserting carbon sheets therebetween in the usual manner. The plate contacts with the surface of the bottom-most printed sheet and is therefore not soiled in use, so that it may be carried in a' purse without soiling handkerchiefs.
The plate holder 12 andthe roller 20 are so arranged in conjunction with the casing 11 that the downward pressure upon the handle 25 is effective in insuring the firm engagement of the surface of the printing roller with the Atopmost sheet between'the casing' and the@ printing plate.
The depression of handle 25 is thus effective in swinging the casing 11 and plate holder toward each other to insure the firm enga-gement of the roller with the interposed paper as well as being effective in causing the downward movement of the' plunger 22 and `the cam 51 carried thereby. The downward movement of the cam surface in engagement with the follower 50 causes the fork member 33 to swing about the pin 32, thus being moved from the position illustrated in Fig. 1
to the position shown in Fig. 3. and the spring 43 being extended during this movement. The ends of the slots 18 in engagement with the bosses 19 at ends of the roller limit the movement of kthe latter and the swinging member 33, the pin 30- also cooperating with the slot 64 in thus limiting the movement of the parts. Asvthel handle is released, the
spring 63 returns handle 25 and plunger 22 to their normal inoperative positions, thus permitting the fork 33 and the roller 50 to be returned to the positions shown in Fig. l by the spring 43. Preferably the pin 30 and the lower end of s101364 are so disposed that the plunger may continue to move upwardly away from the roller for a short distance after the latter has reached the end ot its path due to the engagement of the extensions 19 of the printing roller with the ends of the guide slots. Thus, when the handle is depressed ,to actuate the plunger, the handle, the plunger and the cam gain some momentum before the cam face engages the cooperating roller. The arrangement of the guide slots 18 and cooperating bosses 19 provides anti-friction guide means so that there may be a substantial rolling action between the roller extensions and the walls of the slots 18. It is evident, however, that the frictional engagement of the periphery of roller 2O with the paper ordinarily assures the positive rolling contact between these elements, and that, while the printing is taking place, there consequently may be'some slippage or skidding between the roller extensions 19 and the surfaces of slots 18. It is evident that this arrangement permits the uniform impressing ot the symbols throughout the entire width of the printing plate since each of the same will have practically the same imposed pressure during the same time of contact. It will also be understood that the parts may be so proportioned that the printing pressure between the roller and printing plate is automatically regulated to the desired degree by the lower edge of the casing 11 bearing on the bottom plate 12 through the medium of the sales slips at the lett-hand end of the casing (Fig. l) which is farthest removed from the pivot 13, and/or at one lor both sides of the printing plate. That is, the parts may be so proportioned that in starting the handle 25 downwardly the printing pressure is immediately increased until the lower edge of the casing tightly clamps the paper against the bottom plate whereupon further movement of the casing (and therefore the roller) toward the printing plate is prevented. Consequently variationin the thickness or number of sheets in successive groups of sheets inserted in the device produces no change in the .printing pressure since the increase or decreaseof thickness stops the movement of the easing toward the bottom plate at a greater or lesser distance from the bottom plate due to the same increase ordecrease of thickness of the sheets pinched therebetween.

A printing'device of the class described comprising a plate holder adapted to hold a printing plate, a casing carrying a roller progressively movableover sheets disposed on the printing plate, a longitudinal guide carried by the casing, said guide having guideways engageable with axial bearing surfaces at the ends of the roller, and means for moving the roller transversely of the casing progressively to impress the indicia of said plate upon the sheets.

A printing device of the class described, comprising a casing, a plate holder adapted to hold a printing plate, a roller within the casing and adapted to press against the plate to impress the indicia of the plate on an interposed sheet, guideways for the roller, said guideways having portions disposed to engage axial projections of the rollerto guide the roller, a handle articulated to the casing, and linkage operatively connecting the handle and roller, whereby movement of the handle is effective in causing the roller to move transversely of the casing with its axial projections in engagement with the guideways` y 3. A printing device of the class described, comprising a casing, a guideway extending between the sides of the casing, a single roller having its path defined by the'guideway, means for moving the roller longitudinally of the guideway, said means including a vertically movable plunger slidably mounted in relation to the casing,'a swinging member pivotally connected to the casing, and means causing the movement ot the plunger to effect the swinging of said member, the latter being connected to the roller to cause the same to move along the guideway in response to the plunger.

A printing device of the class described, comprising a casing, a printing plate holder articulated to the casing. a single roller movable along the bottom ot the casing to press sheets into engagement with symbols upon a plate carried by a plate holder, a vertically movable plunger carried by the upper part of the casing, means whereby the plunger causes the movement of the roller from one side of the printing plate to the other, and
resilient means to return the roller to its inoperative position when the pressure upon the plunger is released.
A printing device of the class described, comprising a casing, a guide member extend- 'ing between the sides of the casing, a single roller having concentric portions in engagement with parts of the guide member, a plunger slidably mounted in the casing, a swinging member articulated to the casing, saidA swinging member having a slotted portion engageable with an axial extension of the roller, a spring normally tending to hold the rollerl in a position adjoining one side of the casing, and means operatively connecting the plunger and the slotted swinging member whereby the latter is moved to cause the movement of the.` roller along the guide member.

14; A device of the class described comprising a casing, impressing means associated therewith, a handle pivotally connected to the upper part of the casing, a guide sleeve extending through the upper part of the casing, a plunger disposedin the guide sleeve, the lower end of the plunger being operatively connectedto the impressing means, the part of said guide sleeve that extends into the casing being threaded, and a nut screwed thereon and clamping the tubular member upon the upper part of the casing, a second nut threaded upon the lower end of the tubular member, a locking pin` extending through said second nut, through the tubular member and through a slot in the plun er, said nut that is applied to the bottom o the tubular member being operatively associated with the impressing means.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, impressing means associated with the casing, a handle pivotally mounted upon the upper part of the casing, a guide sleeve extending through the casing, slots in the upper end of the sleeve in which a portion of the handle is disposed, a plunger connected to this portion ofthe handle, and disposed within the sleeve, said plunger being y tubular and having slots in its Walls through which the handle extends, a coil spring within the tubular plunger, a nut operatively connected to a portion of the impressing mechanism and threaded upon the lower part of the guide sleeve, a locking pin extending through said nut and sleeve, and slots in the walls of said plunger through which the pin extends, said pin forming a support for said Y coil springi 16. A device of the class described comprising a casing, impressing means associated therewith, a guide sleeve extending through the top of the casing, a plunger slidable in said guide sleeve, said sleeve having an enlarged portion upon the exterior of the casing, a bracket having a part disposed between said enlarged portion and the top of the casing, a handle pivotally connected to the bracket, a plunger slidable in the guide sleeve and connected to the handle, and a retaining nut within the casing threaded upon the guide sleeve and clamping the bracket against the face of the casing.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, impressing means associated therewith, a guide sleeve extending through the top of the casing, a plunger slidable in said guide sleeve, said sleeve having an enlarged portion upon the exterior of the casing, a bracket having a part disposed between said enlarged portion and the top of the casing, a handle pivotally connected to the bracket, a plunger slidable in the guide sleeve and connected to the handle, and a retaining nut within the casing threaded upon the guide sleeve and clamping the bracket against the face o'f the casing, the exterior portion of said guide sleeve having opposed slots, said handle having a portion received in said slots and connected to the plunger Awhereby the slots provide guideways for the handle.
18. ln a device of the class described a supporting casing, printing mechanism, a handle operatively connected to said mechanism, said handle being pivotally mounted upon the upper portion of the casing, a plunger operatively associated with said handle, a tubular guide member 'extending through the top of the casing, said plunger being slidable in said guide member, a pin disposed diametrically in said tubular member, and a slot in said plunger engageable with said pin.

A printing device of the class described comprising a casing, a plate holder associated with the lower part of the casing, a printing roller movable over a plate supported by said holder, a guideway defining the path of said roller, a plunger slidably mounted in the upper part of the casing, a swinging member pivotally connected to the casing, said swinging member having portions engageable with axial extensions of the roller, resilient means normally positioning the roller and the adjoining part of the swinging member at one side of the casing, and cam and follower means associated with the plunger and swinging member so that downward movement of the former will cause the latter to move the roller along the guideway.

A printing device of the class described comprising a casing, a plate holder associated with the lower part of the casing, a roller movable transversely of the casing to press a sheet against a plate carried by the holder, a'vertically movable plunger slidably mounted in the upper part ofthe casing, mechanism operatively connecting the plunger and roller ciated with the roller and plunger to limit the movement of these parts under the action of their respective spring means, said llo stops being so arranged that the plunger may partially complete its downward movement before the roller starts its transverse movement whereby the plunger and related parts may acquire some momentum before movement of the roller is initiated.

A printing device vof the class described, comprising means for detachably holding a printing plate, a pressure roller adapted to cooperate with the indicia of the plate to print upon an interposed sheet, a longitudinal guide for the roller, said guide being adapted to extend across the plate on the opposite side of the sheet therefrom, whereby the sheet may be received between the plate and the guide, axially extending elements associated and movable with thepressure roller,said elements being engageable with the guide to direct the roller, and means for moving the 22. A printing device comprising a rolling pressure member adapted to roll over a plate holder to print from a plate held thoreby, a plunger operable in a direction transverse to the direction of movementiof the rolling pressure member, cooperating cam and cam follower elements actuable by the plunger, and a swinging member Vfor multiplying and transmitting to the rolling pressure member the motion of the cam lfollower.

A printing device of the class described comprising a plate holder adapted to hold a detachable printing plate having` typographical identifying indicia thereon, a roller adapted to roll over the entire 'extent of the indicia on said printing plate to plint on an interposed sheet, an actuating plunger, and connecting means between the plunger and the roller for multiplying the movement of the plunger and for transmitting said' movement to the roller.
