Abstract

<PICT:0424622/III/1> In the manufacture of hydrogen, ferro-silicon in pieces is loaded directly into an autoclave, together with caustic soda or potash in flakes or pieces and water, or with a solution of caustic soda or potash. The ferro-silicon may be in pieces ranging from 0,05--4 mm., preferably mixed, the fine portions facilitating the reaction. Suitable apparatus for small output comprises a gas vessel 1 provided with a loading and discharge aperture 2 closed by a valve 3 held down by a screw-4 working through a threaded plug 5. A discharge cork 6 furnished with a safety valve or diaphragm and pressure-gauge, is provided. The vessel is supported on trunnions 10 to facilitate loading and unloading. For large outputs, a large gas generator is employed provided with a stirring device, a condenser and a pressure-reducing valve, provision also being made for return of condensed water to the generator.
