Abstract
Cellulose materials such as wood meal or shavings are opened up by thoroughly moistening them with a concentrated aqueous solution of a halogen hydride and subsequently treating them with halogen hydride in presence of an organic liquid which is a solvent for the halogen hydride. Preferably the cellulose material is dried prior to treatment with the aqueous acid solution or prior to treatment with the organic liquid solution of the acid. Hydrochloric acid is the preferred halogen hydride. In an example, small pieces of dried wood are sprayed in a mixer with a strong solution of hydrogen chloride in water. After standing for several hours the wood is placed in a cool mixture of benzine and carbon tetrachloride in a pressure vessel with stirrer and circulating pump. Hydrogen chloride gas is introduced and the pressure is increased, the wood being stirred continuously. After several hours the pressure is released and the hydrogen chloride and solvent are removed from the wood.
