Abstract

Lubricants are obtained by mixing with lubricating oil or grease a colloidal dispersion obtained by protracted mechanical treatment of graphite in train oil. The train oil is preferably first purified and deodorized, some of the lubricating oil or petroleum jelly may be added thereto before or during the protracted treatment, and the graphite is either initially colloidal or is worked in the train oil until colloidal. The dispersion may be produced in ball, impact, kneading, or mixing machines, e.g. a cylindrical drum having rotary brushes contacting with the inner wall. In an example, 10 lb. of colloidal graphite is worked in 90 lb. of train oil for 24 hours at a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C., and 1 vol. of the mixture is added to 100--200 vol. of lubricating oil.
