Abstract

Fertilizers are prepared by treating natural phosphorites with steam at temperatures above 1000 DEG C. in the absence of salts or alkalis, to expel fluorine, then discontinuing the steam supply and raising the temperature to above 1300 DEG C. and up to fusion point if desired. Silica may be added to the raw material. In examples: (1) A Russian apatite is heated in a current of steam for 6 hours at 1200 DEG C., then heated for \ba1/2\be hour at 1500 DEG C. (2) A Constantine phosphate is mixed with quartz sand and heated in steam at 1150 DEG C. for 4 hours, then heated at 1450 DEG C. for 1 hour.
