[Class 27] The differential quantity mechanism 1, of a gas meter, which is set forwarc by insertion of a coin, is returned by a worm shaft ( of the meter driving through a worm-wheel 5 and toothed wheels 4, 2 In order to prevent damage in the case of a leaking valve, the hub 7 of the wheel 4 fixed to a shaft 3 has a number of part spherical or calotte-shaped recesses and the worm-wheel 5, loose on shaft 3, has two or more borings in which are located balls 9 engaging the recesses in the hub 7 to couple the wheels 5, 4 together. The balls are pressed resiliently into the recesses by pins 11 on a disc 10, a compression spring 13 being disposed between the disc 10 and a collar 12 on the shaft 3. If the meter shaft 6 continues to rotate after the mechanism 1 is returned to zero and the wheel 4 prevented from rotating, the balls 9 move into the borings in the wheel 5, the spring 13 being compressed and the coupling between the wheels 5 and 4 broken.
