Abstract
<PICT:0423606/IV/1> Nicotine is recovered from tobacco material by applying indirect heat to the material, which has previously been fermented or treated with alkali and damped, and using the aqueous vapours thus generated to drive off nicotine from more of the same material, the nicotine being finally extracted from the aqueous vapours by a finely subdivided solution of acid which reacts exothermically and so maintains the temperature of the vapours. Specifications 11460/10 and 327,034, [both in Class 2 (iii)], are referred to. The tobacco material, previously treated with milk of lime, is supplied through rotary gate 10<1> and conveyer 11 to the inclined rotary drum A whence it falls into the box I, and is fed into the rotary dryer E to be ultimately discharged at the conveyer 23. Steam is supplied through pipes 21 and 22 in drum E for heating the material and the steam generated passes through conduit H into the drum A, in which the pressure is slightly reduced by a suction fan C, and volatilizes and sweeps away the nicotine from the material in drum A to the bottom of the tower 35, which contains a packing through which sulphuric acid of about 0,6N flows, absorbing the nicotine and passing out to the tank 43. The remaining hot aqueous vapours are subjected to a second extraction, the acid being re-circulated. The nicotine is obtained as a salt. Instead of sulphuric acid, hydrochloric or acetic acids may be used for the absorption.
