Abstract

423,424. Liquid - break switches. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET, Vasteras, Sweden. Aug. 10, 1934, No. 23154. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1933. Addition to 408,077. [Class 38 (v)] The invention described in the parent Specification is modified by arranging for the insulating wall separating the two spaces closed by the differential piston to be movable and connected with the piston, so that during the motion of the latter under the influence of the arc, the wall follows the contact at a small and approximately constant distance from it, whereby the contact tip is always in contact with that part of the liquid where its velocity is highest. The insulating piston 6 is provided with a collar 7 engaging the insulating casing 4 and with an aperture 8 through which the movable contact 2 passes into engagement with the fixed contact 1. When, in opening the switch, the contact 2 is drawn downwards, the pressure set up by the arc drives the piston downwards, whereby liquid is forced from space 16 into space 17 through the aperture 8. The piston is arranged to move at about the same speed as the contact 2, so that the bore 8 will be almost closed during the entire breaking period. The cooling effect is improved by providing channels 20 crossing the bore 8 and debouching at 19 on the space 16. A metal cover 12 carried by a metal part 11 has pressure-relief openings 13 closed by valves 14. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the channels 20 are dispensed with. A common piston may be provided for a plurality of breaks.
