Abstract

423,039. Thermionic cathodes. RADIOAKT.-GES. D. S. LOEWE, 10, Wiesenweg, and WALDSCHNIDT, E., 49, Klingsorstrasse, both in Steglitz, Berlin. July 24, 1933, No. 20779. Convention date, July 25, 1932. [Class 39 (i)] An oxidizable metal core such as a tungsten wire is coated with an intermediate layer of one or more alkaline earth metal oxides and oxide of the core metal, and with a further layer of barium applied by atomization. A solution containing 90 per cent of barium carbonate and 10 per cent of strontium nitrate is applied to a tungsten wire and treated to 800‹ C., in oxygen ; or the layer may be heated in a vacuum and subsequently in oxygen. The exposed portions of the core are thus oxidized to form a coherent coating with the alkaline earth metal oxides. The steps may be repeated so as to obtain a thicker intermediate layer ; or a wire, coated with strontium nitrate and heated in oxygen, may be coated with barium carbonate and heated in oxygen.
