[Class 82 (ii).] A layer of barium or other alkaline earth metal is produced on the oxidized surface of a cathode core 2 by subjecting the core to the action of barium &c. vapour in a chamber 1 which is maintained at such a high temperature that the vapour cannot condense on the wall of the chamber or on any other part. The core is heated by radiation from the wall and, if necessary, by passage of current. The vapour may be introduced by heating metal in a container 4.
