Abstract

<PICT:0422117/IV/1> <PICT:0422117/IV/2> In steaming webs of materials, steam or water vapour is projected on to the material through nozzles, the steam having a head imparted to it by mechanical means, such as a fan, in order to obtain a relatively high velocity of the steam leaving the nozzles. Preferably, the steam travels in a closed circuit which includes a portion of the path of the travel of the material. The speed of the issuing steam is preferably between 10 and 32 feet per second. As shown, Figs. 1 and 4, a web 3 is passed between two sets of opposing nozzles, 7, 7<a>, 7<b>, disposed in two sets of chambers 5, 6. Between these chambers is disposed a suction chamber 4, the steam from the treated web being sucked through 8 and returned to chambers 5, 6 to be blown again on to the web. The end nozzle 7<a> has a steam heater pipe 15 secured thereto to prevent condensation, and the entrances to the upper nozzles are enclosed by walls 16, 17 which permit only a narrow passage for the steam into the nozzles and effect a measure of drying. In addition, gilled heater tubes 18 are also provided. If desired, the web may be treated on one side only, the other side being provided with heater pipes. In a further form, Fig. 5, a web 20 is guided by rollers 21, 22, 23 past nozzles 30, 31, 32. Steam is sucked from the chamber by fan 35 and blown on to the web through the nozzles in a <PICT:0422117/IV/3> closed circuit. Fresh steam is admitted by pipe 37 and condensate removed by pipe 36.
