[Class 98 (i)] [See also Group XXXV] In apparatus, wherein the ray-tube and transformer therefor form a unitary structure, the tube 1 has an equipotential wall portion 17 which bears directly against the transformer core, and its axis is disposed perpendicularly to the planes of the core laminations. The transformer is composed of two similar shell-type transformers 2, 3, the sector-shaped cores of which are concentric with the tube 1 and leave sector-shaped apertures 4, 5 therebetween which serve respectively for the passage of the rays and for the attachment of supporting members. The transformer primary windings 10 are disposed directly around the limbs 8, 9, and surrounded by the secondary windings 6, 7 and insulation 11, a further winding (not shown) being wound on one of the limbs for supplying heating current for the incandescentcathode of the tube. The windings 6, 7 each provide half the tube operating voltage through leads 15, 16, and their common point is connected to the cores 2, 3. The unit is contained in a metallic casing 12 provided with a centring tube 13 and supported as by a bow which reaches into the aperture 5 and permits rotation of the unit about an axis in alignment with that of the tube. The apparatus is particularly suitable for dental purposes and for testing crystalline bodies, in which case the tube may be furnished with two diametrically-opposite windows for testing two objects simultaneously.
