Abstract

421,701. Cooling cylinders. PAYNE, M., 50, Hook Road, Surbiton, Surrey, and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd., Windmill Road, Sunbury, Middlesex. Feb. 12, 1934, No. 4650. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XIII] In engine-cooling systems having a byepass conduit 8 for the flow of cooling-medium directly from the flow pipe 2 to the return pipe 4 when a thermostatic valve 6 controlling the flow to the radiator 3 is closed, one end of the byepass conduit terminates in a nozzle 9 in the return or the flow pipe and directed towards the radiator, whereby the stream of liquid flowing past the nozzle when the valve is open and the radiator is in action tends to induce a flow through the byepass in an upward direction and prevent a circulation of hot liquid down the byepass. A modification is described in which the nozzle leads into the bellows chamber of the valve, located on a wall of the upper header of the radiator, so that the flow of hot liquid into the radiator tends to induce the upward flow through the byepass.
