[Class 83 (iii)] In a lathe particularly designed for use with cemented carbide tools, the bed 9 is arranged above the headstock 14 and tailstock 15 so as to leave a clear space beneath the bed into which the cuttings may fall. The front face of the bed is provided with a dove-tail 21 on which the saddle 22 slides, the tool carrier 29 being fed inwardly and downwardly towards the work at an angle of about 45‹. The bed is supported on vertical standards 10, 11, which form reservoirs for oil and suds respectively and a suds pump 12 is provided. The headstock spindle 16 is driven by a belt 17 from an electric motor 18 arranged on the top of the bed 9. The saddle 22 is fed by a hydraulic cylinder therein and stationary piston rod 28 which is supplied with oil by a pump in the standard 10 driven by an electric motor 23, the feed being controlled by a regulating lever 24 and control lever 25. An adjustable end stop 26 limits the feed towards the headstock and an adjustable trip 27 on the saddle engages the lever 25 to stop the return movement. Cuttings are received within a basket or a removable skip 30, or may be removed by a conveyer passing transversely through the lathe. A baffle 31 may be provided to break up continuous cuttings and a guard 32 may be attached to the skip 30.
