[Class 143] Relates to an apparatus for automatically sorting eggs &c. by weight, of the kind wherein the eggs are placed in counterbalanced weighing receptacles connected together to form a continuous conveyer and are discharged from the receptacles through pivoted bases opened by the action of stops carried on a stationary wall. The invention consists in mounting the stops so that they may be slid vertically by the operation of an external control, and thus placed at any required height between two extreme points, even whilst the apparatus is working. As shown in Fig. 1, each weighing receptacle 1, fulcrumed on a shaft 2 carries a resiliently mounted rod 5 the end of which moves adjacent a stationary wall 4 as the weighing receptacle is carried along by the conveyer. At different stations along the wall are arranged stops 7, 7<1>, 7<11> each adjustable in height against a graduated scale by means of a screw 11, Fig. 3. The weight of the egg depresses the receptacle, and the rod 5 strikes one of the stops 7, 71 or 7<11> corresponding to the extent of depression, causing the rod to turn and liberate a hinged part 14, Fig. 5, of the base. The egg then falls out into its grade compartment. The weighing receptacles are shaped as shown in Fig. 5 so that the eggs roll to a gap e at the bottom. A felt or rubber lining 14<1> absorbs shock.
