[Class 50] Igniting cords of twisted paper or fibre as of cotton or peat and successively impregnated with phosphoric acid and paraffin, are provided at intervals with ring-like friction igniting heads by applying the igniting material so that the applying member does not itself contact with the cord which is twisted at least one revolution whilst in contact with the material. Cord stock rollers 14 are pressed together on a shaft 15 by a spring, adjacent rollers being oppositely wound so that they brake each other as the cords unwind. The cords pass once round a crank-operated roller 18 to prevent slip and extend over an igniting material receptacle 1 between twisting appliances 22, 23, being secured at their ends to a truck 24 running on a horizontal track 26 and connected by a draw-line 28 to a weighted truck 30 on an incline 31. Another draw line 33 wound on a drum 34 serves to pull the truck 24 to the left by rotation of a crank 35. The twisting appliances each consist of two rails 37, 38, the upper ones being pressed by springs 38 against the cords and the lower ones being longitudinally displaceable on rollers as by means of a connecting handle. The receptacle 1 is placed in a heated water, &c., container 3 in which is disposed a frame 4 carrying applying plates 5 projecting through slots in the receptable 1. Frame-supporting rods 7 are raised by a pedal 12 to a point determined by contact of a ring 13 with packing brushes 8 in which position igniting material on the plates 5, but not the plates themselves contacts with the cords. The twisting appliances are then moved so as to rotate and drag the cords laterally through the material preferably once in both directions, the pedal then being released and the cords again rotated a few times to provide an even shape to the adhering material. After the bars 37 are raised by members (not shown), roller 18 is rotated once to provide another length of cord over the igniting receptacle.
