[Class 8 (i)] The inlet valve of a compressor comprises a cage L provided with ports P having spring- pressed valve plates Q. The air, &c., enters through the space K between the cylinder walls through the ports to recesses Z formed in a member W<1> on which the valve cage can slide, and so to the cylinder. The member W forms an extension secured to a cylinder S to which pressure fluid is supplied, e.g., from the receiver, the attachment being by a pair of arcuate ribs U bolted to the member on either side of a plate bolted to the annular top of the cage and pressed upwards by a spring o seated against a rib p on the member W. When the pressure in the cylinder S falls, the valve cage is lifted by the spring, allowing the air, &c., to enter and leave the cylinder freely.
