[Class 130.] In the manufacture of cigarettes with inserted mouth. pieces or filter tips the cigarettes oi cigarette paper tubes are carried by an intermittently rotating drum or carrier to a position in which the mouthpiece insertion devices are operative. The cigarettes or the paper tubes are fed from a hopper to a chamber in which each cigarette or tube is retained by stops until a receiving chamber in the intermittently rotatable drum or element is positioned opposite the outlet of the chamber, when the stops are moved out of the path of the cigarette or tube before it is ejected into a chamber in the drum by a reciprocating slide. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the cigarettes, which are fed singly from a hopper 11 to a grooved drum 12, are retained in the drum by guides 13b and are afterwards positively discharged by guides, extending into grooves in the drum, into a shoot or feed chamber 13. To prevent the cigarettes jamming where the drum 12 leaves the hopper 11, a roller 11<a> is rotated in the same direction as the drum. The outlet 13<a> of the shoot 13 is obstructed by stops 14, carried on pivoted arms 14<a>, and pins 15<a> on a reciprocating slide 15 lower the arms 14<a> against the action of a spring 14b before the slide forces the cigarette into a channel 10<b> in the drum 60. The cigarette is held in the drum by the slide until it is engaged in a tubular bore at the end of the channel. The drum is then reciprocated into alignment with operating devices which remove tobacco from the mouthpiece end of a cigarette, insert a filter tip, and discharge the tipped cigarette. If a cigarette carried by the drum receives a filter tip from a reciprocating spoon 30, Fig. 3, a plunger 31 is moved back by its engagement with the tip, against the action of a spring 31<a> until a block 32 on the plunger engages a flanged head on a reciprocating locking plunger 33 which holds the plunger 31 against further rearward movement and ejects the cigarette as the drum approaches the plunger 31. If the mouthpiece end of the cigarette is empty, the commencement of the rearward movement is delayed until the reciprocation of the plunger 33 has been completed and the block 32 is unable to contact with the plunger 33, so that the plunger 31 moves back freely against the spring 31<a> and leaves the cigarette in the drum as it rotates towards the feeding mechanism. To prevent a cigarette entering a channel in the drum containing a cigarette without a tip, a feeler lever 35, Fig. 1, which is mounted in advance of the feeding position contacts with the cigarette and releases a trip lever 23 from an inoperative position to trip the feeding mechanism without stopping the drum. The discharged cigarettes are received in a recess 37<a> in a roller 37 and are delivered on to a chute 38 leading to a conveyer belts 39.
