418,763. Cutting lengths of rubber &c. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, WILLSHAW, H., and SMITH, H., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. June 9, 1933, No. 16543. [Class 70.] In cutting the two ends of a length of rubber or the like, for example, in the manufacture of tyre tubes, treads, flaps, or protector bands, preparatory to forming an annulus, the ends are brought together one over the other and a cut is taken with a knife fixed in relation to datum means between which and the knife the correct length of rubber is left ready for joining. The knife may be electrically heated in order that the cut ends may be suitable for joining. The ends may be brought together facing in either the same or in opposite directions. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an electrically heated knife 1 pivoted so as to move downwards on to a curved cutting platform 6 disposed either between two suitable datum stops or at the end of a table 2 remote from one datum stop. An auxiliary flap platform is provided on the table, which can be folded over to enable the subsequent joining to be carried out thereon. The knife blade is fixed to a block 8 fitting between two uprights 9 in each of which is a curved slot 10 with which projecting 11 on the block coact. By this means relative movement between the knife and the rubber length may be effected progressively across the width of the latter during the cutting operation. The block 8 carries an extension 12 upon which hangs a weight 13 about which is a guard 14. A spring clip 16 holds the knife in non-operative position.
