A gas fire is provided with a radiating system having upper and lower parts, the lower part being adapted to suit the required luminous radiation, and consisting wholly or mainly of radiants d which enclose the flames rising from the burners a and in which the internal surface area exposed to the flames increases per unit length from the bottom to the top of each radiant, and the upper part consisting of a refractory material adapted to deprive the gases of some of the heat which would otherwise bo wasted and to emit it mainly or wholly as non- luminous radiation. Each radiant d has projections e on the rear or both rear and front inner surfaces, the upper projections being of greater length than the lower ones. The radiant may be solid half way up the back, as shown, or all the way, and is equally perforated throughout its length at the front. The blocks forming the upper part of the radiating system consist of a back f with projections h and a perforated front g. A projection l on the refractory back k restricts the effect of chimney pull on the flames. The burners a are formed with refractory pieces n on which the radiants d rest.
