Abstract
431,676. Gas fires. HELPS, G., Manor Court, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Oct. 9, 1933, No. 13341. [Class 126] In incandescent gas fires the radiant material is carried by a grid-like structure formed of spaced bars carried by, but not integral with, the fire back or base, or by a supporting frame ; alternatively, in the case of tubular radiants these may be supported on " cobble " refractory material, resting on the fire-back. In either case, an increased surface exposed to the flames is provided without a proportionate increase in the heat conduction through the fire-back. A number of different forms of fire are described, Fig. 1 showing a construction in which tubular radiants 1 rest on cobble material 2 carried by a metal base plate 6, further cobble material being placed over the radiants. Figs. 2 and 4 show a fire having a refractory back 6<11> the front of which is channelled to form ribs 7 which are notched to carry spaced bars 8 between which and a front metal guard 9 is carried cobble fuel 2, this being heated by a burner the jets of which are arranged in the channels of the back. Alternatively, the face of the back may be plain, vertical fillets taking the place of the ribs 7 being arranged in front of it. Figs. 19 and 20 show a fire in which round bars 11 support cobble fuel 12 which is preferably curved to engage them. The gas jets 13 are delivered between the bars, which are shown as resting on cobble fuel. Fig. 29 shows a fire comprising cobble fuel 2 resting on an inclined grid of bars 11 carried in a frame 16 and heated by a burner 5. In a somewhat similar fire, a further layer of cobbles is supported on an inclined fire-brick below the grid, the flames passing up the space between the two layers. The bars forming the grid may be secured together as a single unit, and they may be of other than rectangular or circular section, a number of alternative forms being illustrated. In some cases a structure supporting cobble fuel may be built of a number of stepped layers of bars, as shown in Fig. 23.
