Abstract

418,585. Furnace grates. JONES, N., 19, Moorside Avenue, and BROUGHTON, J. R., 40, Bromwich Street, both in Bolton. March 28, 1933, No. 9278. [Class 51 (i).] In a furnace grate formed by a plurality of transverse bars 3 each having a series of lateral openings 3<a> which when the bars are assembled are in alignment with the corresponding openings of the other bars to form a series of longitudinal air supply passages extending throughout the length of the grate, the surface of each opening 3<a> is cylindrical at its lower half and at its upper half is conical, the conicity increasing from zero at one side f<1> to a maximum at the other side f. Each bar is formed with a lateral flange 3b having a series of semi-circular grooves c. Air and steam are supplied to each longitudinal passage by means of an injector 7 and Venturi tube 6 formed with spiral ribs 6<a>. The upper scroll-like surface of each individual opening 3<a> serves to deflect or distribute the steam and air through the grooves c into the fuel on the grate. The supply through the grate may be controlled by a damper 8. A gutter g formed along the bottom of each passage allows dust to collect without interfering with the air flow. The passages may be cleaned with a cylindrical brush.
