[Class 135.] In apparatus for maintaining a liquid at a desired temperature, a differential cut-off valve s is located in the main gas supply pipe, the control chamber x of which has an exhaust passage w narrow in comparison with the main gas supply pipe, this passage being controlled by an auxiliary valve v actuated directly by a thermostat u in a chamber o through which passes vapour produced by heating the liquid. As applied to a water heater, the steam pipe passes down through the water space and through the wall of the container a where it joins a pipe n leading to the chamber o and an outlet pipe p. The chamber o contains a casing t housing a bimetallic strip u the free end of which passes into a chamber q and is connected to the valve v which closes the end of a pipe r when the heat of the steam bends the strip u. Gas then accumulates in the control chamber x and the valve s therefore closes. The container a which is suitably lagged has a reentrant conical chamber projecting from the bottom into the water space and inside this chamber extends a similarly shaped shell arranged so that the hot gases from the burner have to pass between the shell and the chamber wall before reaching the flue i. The container has a subsidiary restricted steam outlet which ensures that the gas is not cut off until the water is boiling vigorously.
