Abstract

298,221. McCutchen, J. E. Oct. 6, 1927, [Convention date]. Fluids, regulating volume of flow of.- In a liquid fuel burning apparatus in which the main burner or a preheating burner heating the vapour generator of the main burner is supplied initially with carburetted air from the space above the gasoline or similar fuel in the fuel tank, the flow of carburetted air is automatically cut off when the generator of the main or preheating burner becomes sufficiently hot to vaporize the fuel. Figs. 1 and 2 show a stove in which the generator 2 for the burner 5 is heated by a preheating burner 16 having a vapour generator 18 which is normally supplied with fuel from a tank 3 through pipes 8, 15 and a control valve 14. The pipe 8 is fitted at the bottom with a removable nipple 10 having a restricted orifice 11 and communicates below the normal liquid level in the tank with an up standing pipe 12, having an inlet 21 in the compressed air space 6. The orifice 11 is of larger diameter than the discharge orifice of the generator 18. When the valve 14 is opened compressed air charged with gasoline vapour passes from the space 6 with fuel entering by the orifice 11 to the burner 16 and may be ignited by a match flame. When the generator 18 becomes sufficiently hot to vaporize the fuel a back pressure is created and sufficient fuel can enter bv the orifice 11. The escape of air from the space 6 then automatically ceases. In an ordinary vapour burning incandescent lamp the fuel supply tube 34 leading from the front to the main vaporized is fitted also the level of the fuel with a housing 36 having an inlet port 37 controlled by a float operated valve 38. The space above the fuel level in housing 36 communicates with the space above the fuel level in the font by a tube 41 and with the bottom of the tube 34 by a tube 44. Fuel passes from the housing 36 to the tube 34 through a restricted orifice 35. When the valve in the vapour generator is opened carburreted air passes from the top of the font through the tubes 41, 44, 34 to the burners or mantles where it may be instantly ignited. When the generator becomes hot the back pressure increases and only liquid fuel passes up the tube 34.
