Abstract
418,299. Spray carburetters. ENGLEHEART, H. F. R. RAY-, 189, Queen's Gate, South Kensington, London. March 16, 1933, No. 8051. [Class 7 (iii).] An atomizer comprises a nozzle having an aperture through which an axial stream of fluid issues, means for projecting a second stream of fluid at right-angles to and from opposite or all sides inwardly across said first stream of fluid whereby the fluid forming one or both of said streams is thoroughly disintegrated and reduced to a fine state of division, and a convergent conical passage and a divergent conical passage in succession through which the mixed fluids issue. One stream of fluid is conveyed to an axial tube a, Fig. 1, provided with an end member b with a fine axial bore therein, and another stream is fed to an annular passage c which terminates in a peripheral slit or fine bore opening d. The two streams are thus projected across one another at right angles. The atomized fluid issues finally through a convergent-divergent nozzle e, f, the angle of each cone being substantially a rightangle. Between this nozzle and the member b a series of convergent orifices r may be arranged. In a modification, Fig. 3, the atomizer comprises two parts a<1>, a<2> hinged at a<3> so that they may be separated for cleaning, and are normally drawn together by a spring. The parts are shaped to form an atomizing nozzle e, f of rectangular cross-section with an inner passage b for fuel or other fluid and outer passages b<2> for air or other fluid, a cork packing being provided at c<1>. The inner and outer passages are supplied with fluid by conduits such as w<2>. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the atomized fluid emerges radially or at rightangles to its general direction of flow instead of axially or in alignment with its general direction. In a still further modification, Fig. 7, the atomizer is applied to a carburetter and comprises two convergent-divergent nozzles t, t<1> and a number of conical passages r. Fuel is supplied through the passage m and air is induced into the passage n through an orifice o.
