The object of the invention is to provide an atomizing or spraying device comprising a nozzle so formed that one stream of fluid is projected at right angles to and from all sides across an aperture supplying a second stream of fluid whereby it results that the mixture is thoroughly disintegrated and reduced to a fine state of division.
Further features of the invention will be apparent from the description given hereafter.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one mode of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing one form of atomizing or spraying device in accordance with the invention, taken on the line I--l of Fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the device.
In carrying my invention into efiect in one convenient manner when applying the same, for example, to a spraying device and as illustrated in Figure 1, I form my apparatus with an atomizing jet comprising a tube a or tubular passage through which the one fluid stream is supplied, said passage terminating in a cap or end portion b having a fine axial bore b therein through which the fluid issues in a fine axial stream. The tube a is provided with an enlarged tubular extension or mouth 0 adapted to receive the cap or end member b, said extension having internal 35 screw threads adapted to engage the lower threaded end of an outer pipe d having apertures 6 through which a second fluid supply is fed. An
inner tube or pipe u is arranged within the outer pipe and spaced from the inner wall thereof to 40 form an annular passage 1 for the second fluid fed through the apertures e. The outer annular passage terminates in a peripheral slit g through which the second fluid is made to issue in a fine stream so as to be projected from all sides across the aperture or bore b in the end or cap member b, the two fluid streams thus meeting one another at right angles, and one enveloping and/or disintegrating the other so as to secure an intimate mixture.
The peripheral slit g above mentioned may be formed by arranging the lower or inner annular surface of the inner tube u parallel with and spaced a short distance away from the end or top plane surface of the cap b, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The atomizer finally comprises a main nozzle tarranged at the upperends' of 1 pipes "u. andd through which the fluid mixture issues, the'nozzle having an inner conical portion 71. with a substan tially right-angled vertex into'which the mixture is made to converge and-there is also an outer divergentconical portioni with a substantially right-angledyertex from which the fluid'mixture finally emerges in a conical stream, there being a very small and substantially knife-edged opening between the inner and outer conical portions which thus provide a venturi. A second similar nozzle t is arranged within the lower portion of the pipe 11., there being also, if desired, a plurality of members r forming a plurality of convergent conical passages through which the mixture passes before reaching the nozzles t or t. The nozzle t, as shown in Fig. 1 opens into the induction pipe is to which my improved atomizer is connected.
The invention is not to be limited to the details of construction hereinbefore given by way of example as I may vary the angles of the conical passages, the number of such employed in any atomizing or spraying nozzle and any suitable means may be employed for feeding the fluid supplies (which may be the same or different fluids) depending upon any particular practical requirements that may have to be fulfilled.
Furthermore the invention is not to be restricted to its application to carburettors as the atomizing device may be employed generally with all forms of spraying apparatus in which a relatively fine state of division is required in the atomized fluid, and in any form of the invention I may use any number of atomizing nozzles in series and/or parallel, depending upon practical requirements.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an atomizer a nozzle comprising a member provided with a cylindrical recess and a tubular passage communicating with said recess, a plug member in said recess having a portion extending into said passage and having an axial bore therein and an end surface at right angles to said bore, a tubular extension to said recess terminating at the end remote from said plug member in an aperture comprising adjacent convergent and divergent conical passages, a tubular member within said tubular extension forming a fluid tight joint with the inner wall thereof adjacent said convergent and divergent conical passages and at the opposite end having an annular FF C end surface adjacent to the end surface of the plug member and parallel thereto, said members defining an inner tubular passage longitudinally disposed with respect to said first mentioned tubular passage, an outer annular passage and a peripheral slit, and members in said inner tubular passage adjacent the annular end surface providing a series of convergent conical passages and a divergent conical passage in succession, said tubular extension having apertures in the wall thereof for entry of fiuid into said annular.

In an atomizer, a first tubular member providing an inner tubular passage, an end cap member having an axial bore and a plane end surface of considerably greater area. than the crosssectional area of the bore and extending at right angles to the axis of said bore, a secondtubular member concentric with said first tubular member and providing an outer annular passage,-one end portion of said second member housing an annular member providing a convergent conical passage and a divergent conical passage in succession, said first tubular member having an inner annular surface parallel to the end surface of the end cap member, said annular surface being so disposed with respect to said end surface as to provide a peripheral slit at right angles to said axial bore, means for supplying fluid through said bore to said tubular passage and means for supplying fluid to said slit through said annular passage.
3. In an atomizer, a first member providing an inner passageway, an end cap member having an axial bore and a plane end surface of greater I area than the cross sectional area of the bore and extending at right angles to the axis of said bore, said first member having an annular surface at its lower end arranged parallel to the end surface of the end cap member and spaced 7 therefrom to provide a peripheral slit at right HERBERT FRANCIS RAY RAY-ENGLEHEART.
