Abstract

<PICT:0417719/IV/1> Wool and like fibre, such as animal hair, rabbit hair, and mohair, as fabric or as yarn or in loose condition is chlorinated or brominated by evacuating the treating chamber prior to the admission of the gas so that it is rapidly diffused through the charge. The chamber may be provided with a cooled surface out of contact with the material, to prevent deposition of moisture on the material, and a domed lid for the same purpose. As shown, a cylinder 1 provided with a domed lid 2 and, preferably, a cooling coil 11, is evacuated via pipe 6. Chlorine or bromine, the amount of which may be weighed by machine 9, is introduced from cylinder 3<x> via a perforated tube 5, covered with roller lapping, embedded in the tops 8 supported on grid 10. The Provisional Specifications describe also the introduction of the gases under a pressure difference such as to cause rapid diffusion, and, according to the second Provisional Specification, bromine may be introduced in an air stream having a higher pressure than that obtaining in the interior of the chamber.
