Abstract

417,052. Television. MARTIN, L. C., 99, Nightingale Lane, Bromley, Kent. March 21, 1933, No. 8543. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iii).] Slowly moving objects are scanned at an abnormally low frame-frequency and each of the reproduced pictures is projected for a correspondingly long time. Thus a Nipkow disc at the transmitter may complete only four frames instead of the usual sixteen per second ; and the number of scanning-lines can be proportionately increased, or the speed of the scanning-spot reduced. At the receiver the picture is reproduced, by means of a Kerr-cell light-valve and a mirror drum, on a kinematograph film which is projected in such a manner that each constituent picture is exhibited for four times as long as usual ; alternatively the film may comprise four successive copies of each picture or frame and be operated at the usual speed. If the light-valve comprises a doubleimage prism in combination with a Kerr cell, one moving light-spot may be projected on to the film and the other, for monitoring purposes, on to a screen surfaced with phosphorescent material such as a Lenard phosphor; and in order that the moving spot may itself be invisible, it may consist of ultra-violet light, or light of a colour complementary to that of the screen. The light-valve may be adjusted to give a positive or negative picture or (if a double-image prism is employed) both.
