[Class 29.] A cold accumulator comprises a tank 1 for water or other liquid, and a vacuum snowproducing apparatus 7, liquid being supplied from the tank to the evaporator by a pipe 9 and a mixture of snow and liquid being restored to the tank by a feed pipe 10 to constitute a reserve of cold. The warm liquid from a heat exchanger 3, employing the refrigerating liquid, is returned by a pipe 5 to the cold accumulator and falls as rain over the snow which is retained in a screen 12. Warm liquid from the consumer 3 may be byepassed into the evaporator at 16 or 16<1> to produce jets in the snow-liquid mixture and prevent snow deposits on the evaporator walls or in the nozzle 17 respectively. The production of snow may be effected in a multi-stage evaporating machine in cascade.
