Abstract

416,622. Making split-rings; annealing. OUBRIDGE, W. A., Parklands, Park Road, Coventry. Dec. 16, 1933, No. 35436. [Class 83 (ii).] Piston or like rings, are formed to the selected curve as defined in Specification 135,249, [Class 83 (ii)], before being severed from a cylinder or pot. A pot a is turned to the required diameter, annular saw cuts c are formed, and the pot is longitudinally slotted at d, a spacing strip being inserted in the slot to expand the rings to the required form. The pot is then heat-treated at 820‹ C. to set it in the expanded form, and the rings are removed by breaking them apart or by machining out the bore. When the pot is turned initially to the selected curve a longitudinal groove or two saw cuts are formed instead of the slot d, so that a gap equal in width to the open gap of an unstressed ring may be produced after hardening by removing the metal from the groove or between the saw cuts. The longitudinal cuts may be made by a saw or cutting flame. Specification 416,617, [Group II], is referred to.
