Abstract
214,969. Pelterie, R. Esnault-. April 26, 1923, [Convention date]. Addition to 194,269. Rings.-In making improved packing-rings of the kind described in the parent Specification the ring is made thick and is nicked or coned to start the slots and initially has a rearward extension A, Fig. 1, to facilitate the slitting operation, which extension is finally removed, a supporting- portion a<2> being left, Fig. 15. The slitting operation may be effected by the smooth cone described in the parent Specification, or by the apparatus shown in Figs. 17, 18 which consists of a holder A, B', B<2> for the ring, and a longitudinallymovable expander which has small projections G<1> to grip the ring parts, and large projections G to break the metal. The ring is first subjected to a cementation process, is then bored to remove internal unrequired cemented parts, and is then internally grooved and recessed at g; it is next hardened and the slits formed, and internally bored to remove the excess thickness and is finally machined to the shape shown in Fig. 15. The slits may be formed helicoidal by making the projections on the expander helical and feeding it helically into the ring. Two rings may be used for jointing the parts c, c<1> of an engine cylinder as shown in Fig. 16.
