Abstract

576,757. Diamond tools. SLUTZKY, N. J. April 28, 1944, No. 8009. [Class 124] In a diamond tool one or more diamonds are assembled in one or more cavities in a carrier which, whilst cold, is subjected to mechanical pressure to embed the diamonds in the carrier. The pressure may be applied by a press or by subjecting the carrier to a drawing or rolling operation which may also space the diamonds and/or expose their cutting faces. Alternatively, spacing members may be inserted between the diamonds. The carrier may be made of copper, aluminium, an alloy of copper with aluminium or beryllium, or mild steel. As shown, large or small. diamonds 32, 35, Figs. 1 and 7, are filled into the closed end of a tubular carrier 31, the open end of which is flattened for manipulation purposes. The carrier is drawn through dies of decreasing size until it has the section shown in Figs. 5 and. 9, and the flattened end is cut off. It is placed in an undercut groove 33 in a tool holder 34 and pressure applied until it fills the groove. Its top is then machined or etched with acid to expose the cutting faces of the diamonds as shown in Figs. 6 and 10. The holder 34 may be hardened after forming the groove 33, but before inserting the carrier 31. In the form shown in Figs. 7, 9 and 10, a straight or twisted filler strip of non-circular cross-section may be arranged along the centre line of the tubular carrier 31. The Specification also describes and illustrates the application of the invention to (1) an internal grinder; (2) a helical internal lap built up from four elements of the kind shown in Fig. 7 ; (3) a trueing tool with a single diamond at one end of a bar ; (4) various forms of face cutters ; and (5) tool holders for grinding-machines.
