[Class 126.] A flicker effect is produced in an imitation solid-fuel fire by one or more electric bulbs of the type giving light of a flickering nature without the aid of external mechanical or electrical devices, for example a bulb charged with neon gas or a gas mixture and constructed so that the luminous glow area moves round the interior of the bulb. The light may be rendered the desired colour by the use of an appropriate gas or gas mixture, or by colouring the bulb. Fig. 1 shows an imitation fire with the fuel partly cut away to show the flicker lamp 4 and an ordinary lamp 5, which are concealed behind it. The fuel is translucent and is provided with apertures 6 and may be further illuminated from the front by an external flicker lamp, screened from view for example by a kerb. The apertures in the fuel may be arranged so that the moving luminous area is visible through them. In another form of fire a reflector is arranged behind the flicker lamp, a coloured translucent panel is provided in the base, the back of the fire above the fuel forms a reflector, and a heating element is arranged beneath the canopy. Fig. 4 illustrates a simple form of imitation fire not provided with imitation fuel, comprising a reflector 1 with a heating element 2 and one or more flicker lamps 3 secured by the upturned shield portion 4.
