Abstract
416,065. Cooling cylinders. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., GREEN, F. M., and REYNOLDS, R., Park Side, Coventry. Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3850. [Class 7 (ii).] A faring for an aircraft engine comprises an outer part 5 arranged above, and extending in front of the engine cylinder 2 and an inner part 8 extending to the cylinder head ; an outturned flap 17 pivoted at the rear edge on helical springs 18 which tend to keep it in its outward direction, increases the air-flow past the cylinder at low speed and reduces the drag on the aircraft at high speed. On a radialcylinder engine the faring takes the form of a circular or polygonal ring with a frustumshaped rear edge, constructed in sections, which may be arranged for manual or automatic simultaneous control. Two methods of control are described, viz. :-(a), by a continuous cable extending over pulleys under each flap, and (b), by a series of nuts, rotated by a flexible shaft, on the ends of threaded-links extending from bell-cranks on the flaps.
