Abstract

455,248. Propelling aircraft. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO.,Ltd., Bristol, and FEDDEN, A. H. R., Filton House, and COPLEY, J. W., 44, Norton Road, Knowle, both in Bristol. Aug. 9, 1935, No. 22545. [Class 4] [See also Group XXVII] Adjustable flaps 14, at the rear of an aircraft engine cowling 11, are mounted in slots in the sides of actuating members 19 and thus present a continuous rear edge in all positions of adjustment. The flaps are retained by spring-pressed T-shaped members 28 which engage recesses in their edges. The members 19 are pivoted to brackets 16, mounted on a rectangular-sectioned metal ring 12 which supports the cowling by connections 13 from the cylinder head. End flaps 41 on each side of the exhaust pipe 40 are supported on one side only by pins 44 which engage L-shaped slots in the flaps by spring clips engaging the underside of the members 19. The flaps are operated as described in Specification 455,249, [Group XXVII], by an endless chain 49, rotated by a handle 58, or by electric, or hydraulic power. The movement may be controlled by a thermal device. The Provisional Specification describes fixing the flaps by dowel pins adjacent the pivots.
