Abstract

Adhesives are obtained by decomposing or mixing casein or similar albuminous substances with the sodium silicates obtained according to Specification 391,407, [Group III], or with the corresponding potassium silicates. In the case of mixtures, dry preparations are obtained which yield adhesives upon the addition of water. Preferably the amount of silicate used corresponds to about 10-15 per cent of the casein employed. Lime for accelerating the setting of the glue, colouring matters, fillers such as chalk or softening agents such as triethanolamine may be added. A quick-setting and waterproof glue is obtained by adding quicklime and/or seralbumin to a glue obtained as above, and may be used in the manufacture of plywood and other joined wooden articles in a heated hydraulic press.
