[Class 89 (iii).] A machine for driving a pin or spike into each end of a wooden rod, such rods being for use in packing flowers in boxes, comprises guides 8, 9 secured to a base 3, the guide 9 being adjustable. A rod 5 to be operated upon is located slidably in the guides by clips 26. Slidable in the guides are pin holders 11, 12, each formed with a slot 14 to receive a pin 6 and to guide a driver 16 or 15. The driver 15 is secured to a fixed block 21 and is encircled by a spring 22 which holds the holder 12 away from the block 21. The driver 16 is secured to a plunger 17 to which the pin holder 11 is also connected by slotted links. The plunger 17 is connected by a link 18 to a hand-lever 19. When the latter is operated, the driver 16 first forces a pin into the right-hand end of the rod 5. The plunger 17 then engages the holder 11 and moves it and the rod 5 to the left, so that the spring 22 yields and the driver 15 forces a pin into the left-hand end of the rod. Each holder has a vertical slot 13 for supplying pins to the slot 14, and may be associated with a pin hopper. For driving pins having a central collar, Fig. 5, the slot 13 is provided with a corresponding enlargement 13<a>. Guards 23, 25 are provided for protecting the operator's hands.
