[Class 108 (iii).] In an hydraulic shock-absorber comprising a double-ended piston b adapted to be reciprocated by an arm c in a cylinder a the ends a<1>, a<2> of which are connected by a channel l cut on the cylinder wall, a cylindrical member o has two passages p<1>, p<2>, Fig. 2 therethrough constituting branches of the channel, and adapted to be closed by adjustable, non-return valves q<1>, q<3> opening in opposite directions and is removably fitted in a widened part m of the channel which is accessible from outside the shock-absorber on removal of a cover n. To permit passage of liquid without opening of the valves q<1>, q<2> when slight shocks occur, the member o is provided with a peripheral groove t, or with a bore, which maintains permanent communication between the cylinder ends. A reservoir d above the cylinder communicates with the cylinder ends through a transverse opening b' and a channel f in the piston, the ends of the channel being closed by adjustable, spring-pressed plates g which permit flow of liquid only from the reservoir to the cylinder ends.
