Abstract

413,633. Friction clutches. AVERY, W. L., Blue House, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. Nov. 16, 1932, No. 32441. [Class 80 (ii).] Capsules that are adapted to be expanded by liquid under pressure for operating brakes or clutches, are provided with a pipe which extends to a point where air tends to collect and by which the air may be permitted to escape. The face of the capsule which engages the brake or clutch member is corrugated so that the contact area is maintained substantially constant. Fig. 2 shows a metallic annular capsule of disc form having flat operating surfaces 3 bounded by circular corrugations 2. Pressure liquid is supplied by a pipe 9 and a radial limb 9<1> of the capsule. A pipe 8 leads from the top of the capsule to an outlet 10 by which air can escape on removing a cap 11. The pipe 8 need not pass through the pipe 9. The capsule may be used for operating a disc brake such as described in Specification 392,603. Fig. 5 shows a capsule of hollow ring form with a radially movable entirely corrugated operating surface 6. The air escape tube 12 may be separate from the liquid supply tube 14 as shown or may be arranged within it.
