Abstract

413,272. Connecting-rods. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., MELHUISH, M., 368, Ealing Road, Alperton, Middlesex, and ASHBY, A. F., 9, Watford Way, Hendon, London. Jan. 7, 1933, No. 601. [Class 122 (i).] A connecting-rod of H or X cross-section is provided with one or more ribs or flanges 5 of constant thickness extending completely around the big end to minimize the effects of distortion and to facilitate heat radiation. The rod 1 is of increasing width, the end 3 is split and provided with bolt bosses 4 separated from the flanges 5 by deep grooves 6 which also separate the centre member 1 of the H- rod from the flanges 5, Fig. 8. One or more additional strengthening ribs 9, Fig. 4, may be formed on the cap and connected to the flanges 5 by curved ribs 9a. The side sections 1a of the body may merge into the flanges 5 and be connected thereto by additional flanges 5a. In a modified form of the rod, the side members of the H-section body lie in planes at right angles to the journal axis and merge into the big-end flanges. In a further modification, the webs of an X-cross-sectioned rod merge into the flanges. The ribs and flanges are tapered to dissipate heat. The little end may be similarly flanged.
