[Class 3 (i).] A non-endless display band is wound on and off two rollers intermittently in each direction, with automatic reverse at each end of traverse, by a solenoid supplied with direct or, when fitted with a rectifier, alternating current. The period of display, and the time taken in effecting change of display, can be regulated separately by a dash-pot having adjustable air inlet and outlet valves, the return of the solenoid plunger during display being by gravity. One of the rollers is connected to its shaft by a spring which tensions the band, and the varying travel of the band due to change of effective size of the rollers, is compensated by the spacial disposition of the displays on the band. The rollers are geared together by chain and sprocket, the chain being driven a constant distance at each actuation by a shaft 13 geared therewith. The shaft 13 carries a disc 14 having notches 15 engaged by two pawls 19, 19<a> pivoted on linkages 16, 17 and pressed to the disc 14 by springs 20. The links 17 are pivoted to a cross-bar 11 on the solenoid plunger, and one of them is rendered ineffective by a guard 21 pivoted at 22 so as to lie on one side or the other and thus determine the direction of rotation of the shaft 13. A spring-pressed locking-bar 41 registers the disc 14. The reversal of the travel is obtained by a Geneva-stop 33 on the shaft 13 rotating a gapped disc 35 one step for each display, one or the other of two pins 36, 36<a> raising a spring- pressed catch 37 and releasing and subsequently pushing an arm 39 on the spindle 22 to move the guard 21. The display band is illuminated by lamps which are switched on during display by an arm 26 snapped against contacts 24 by a spring 27<a> coupled at its other end to a rod 27 fixed to the bar 11 to move up and down with the plunger. When the rod 27 comes to its bottom position it brings the arm 26 over to contacts 25 which make the solenoid circuit. Catches spring-held and released by a second arm moving vertically with the plunger time the exact moments of make and break of the arm 26.
