Reel and non-endless web apparatus.-A band 8 which is moved forward step-by-step to display advertisements, pictures, posters, show cards. &c., then automatically reversed to display them in the opposite order, is mounted on two rollers 2, 3 carried in a frame 1. The actuation is effected by a chain 10 running over a toothed wheel on the shaft 4 of the roller 2 and over an idle wheel 12. The chain 10 carries pins 11 which are engaged by spring pawls on a member 28 reciprocated vertically on guides 29 by rods 27 pivoted to one end of a hinged lever 25 having an up-and-down motion effected and positively controlled by two cams 21, 22 rotated by a motor 15. The pawls on the member 28 are carried by a sliding piece which pushes one or the other into engagement with the pins 11, and thus determines in which direction the chain 10 will be dragged. The sliding piece is controlled by a rotatable member 35, Fig. 4, carrying a spring- retracted sliding ring, whereby the member 35 is held in position, the member being operated by two spring-pressed rods 51, 52 pivoted directly and indirectly to two hanging links 49, 50, Fig. 2. These links are pushed in opposite directions by two pins located in two of a series of holes 45 in a worm wheel 44 driven by a worm 42 on the shaft 4, and cause the rods 51, 52 to be moved in turn into the path of the arms 36, 36<A> of the member 35. The pins can be placed in any two selected holes 45, the selection determining the positions of the band 8 which are exposed when reversal in either direction takes place. To ensure the winding-on roller rotating at a faster rate than the other the roller shafts 4, 5 are connected at each end by endless belts 61 passing round pulleys 59, 60, one of which is larger than the other. Each shaft 4, 5 carries a larger pulley, which is fixed thereto, and a smaller pulley, which is mounted thereon with one-way connection by a spring pawl 62 engaging a ratchet wheel 63. The tension of the belts 61 is controlled by adjustable jockey pulleys 67. To prevent spinning of the roller 2 a friction belt 68, attached by a spring 71 to a weight 73, is passed round one end. The lever 25 bears on the weight 73 at the end of each downward stroke of the member 28 to increase the friction on the roller 2.
