lVhile the invention is herein shown and described as an advertising device, it will be apparent from an understanding of the same, that it is susceptible of various other uses and it is not the purpose of the present application to limit the invention to this use. For a clear understanding of the invention however, certain of the mechanism will be hereinafter referred to as the advertising mechanism and certain other parts of the mechanism hereinafter referred to as the directory or information mechanism.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a cabinet which is indicated at 18, the front of the cabinet being provided near the center and at one side with an opening which is covered by a glass panel 19 to provide a display opening for the information sheets or curtains to be hereinafter described. The top of the cabinet is also provided with an opening, which is covered by a glass panel 20' to provide a display opening for the advertising sheets or curtains, also to be hereinafter described. The lower portion of the cabinet is provided with doors 21, by means of which access may be had to the interior, while the top of the cabinet is provided with a hinged cover or closure 22 for a like purpose. The cabinet 18, reduces in width at its central point, so that a table or shelf 23 is rovided, the latter forming a support for n index 23, around which moves a pointer 23" which is controlled by a hand wheel 24. n ending through the table or shelf 23, is :1 operating knob 25, both this knob and the n 1 wheel 24 controlling the operation'of informat on mechanism, as will be herenafter apparent.
Located within the cabinet and secured to he base thereof, is a suitable motor 26, the "baft of the motor carrying a pinion 27, which operates a main drive shaft 28, through the medium of a gear 29. The shaft 28 is mounted in suitable bearings 30 secured to the base of the cabinet and has secured thereon a gear 31, having a relatively wide face. Meshing with the gear 31, is a gear 32 the latter being loose upon a counter shaft 33, which is mounted for rotation in bearings 34 also secured'to the base of the cabi net. Each side of the gear 32 is provided with an extended hub, the outer end of which is formed with a clutch face, one of which is adapted to engage a clutch member 46 fast upon the shaft 33 and the other a clutch face formed on a bevel pinion 55 which is rotatable upon the shaft 33. A
Also secured upon the shaft 28 is a pinion 35, the latter driving a gear 36, which is mounted on a short shaft 37, which rotates in bearings 38. The shaft 37 is further provided with a pinion 39 which drives. a gear 40. This gear is mounted upon a short shaft 41, which operates in bearings 4.2. The shaft 41 also has mounted thereon a collar 43 which is provided with a cam groove 43 and operating in the groove is a roller 43*, which is mounted upon one end of a lever 44. This lever is pivoted at 45 upon the base of the cabinet and its opposite end is connected to one of the hubs of the gear 33 as indicated at 45.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that rotation of the collar43 through the reduction gears just described will,
through the cam groove 43 rock the lever the sprocket wheels 50 and reverses the.
direction of travel of the chains 51 and 51, which pass over said sprockets, by shifting the lever 44 in opposite directions, so as to regulate the direction of rotation of the shaft 49 and cause the chains to alternately travel in opposite directions.
Mounted within the upper end of the cabinet is a plurality of centrally disposed shafts 74, 75 and 76, the shaft 74 and the shaft 49 having loosely mounted thereon sprockets 72. Passing over these sprockets are chains 64 and chains 64, which are spaced apart to provide lower and upper chains respectively, a pair of these chains being mounted at each end of the, display opening or panel 20. These chains are driven by a sprocket 72 and pass over sprockets 73 which are mounted upon the shafts 75 and 76.
Each of the chains 64 and 64 comprise bracket links'65 and 65*, these links alter,- nating with the usual chain links and being connected by rods 70, which extend from the links of the chain 64 to the chain 64*. The bracket links 65 are each provided with a circular opening 66, while the bracket links 65 of the chain 64 are provided with notches 69, so as to provide for mounting 5 between the links of the upper chain 64 and the lower chain 64, a plurality of spring controlled sheets or curtains 67 as shown in Figures 24 and 25 of the drawings. These sheets or curtains are provided along their outer edges with rods 68, which pro ject beyond the chains and when the sheets or curtains are rolled, are adapted to engage hooks 68 provided in the ends of the bracket links.
Through the mechanisml'just described *these sheets or curtains are adapted to be consecutively brought into position at opposite ends of the display opening and to rest or pause in such position for a predecurtains are unrolled over the display opening. To accomplish this there is provided a carrying plate 53, the latter being secured at the opposite ends of the chains 51 and 51 and to be moved backward and forward across the display opening by the operation of the chains as previously described. For the purpose. of engaging thesheets or curtains,-the carrying plate 53 is provided ad- 'jacent each end with'oppositely extending hooks 53, these hooks being adapted to engage the projecting ends of the rods 68 and to unwind the curtain of the rod so engaged and carry the latter across the dis play opening. When the carrying plate 53 reaches the opposite side of the opening and starts upon its reverse movement, the opposite hooks 53 will engage the end of the rods 68 upon that end of the opening and carry its curtain across the said opening upon the reverse movement of the plate. lVhen the plate again reaches the end of its travel, the first curtain will be released and the chains 64 and 64 operated to posi- 55 tion another sheet or curtain in the path of thehooks 53 To accomplish the movement of the cur tains or sheets, there is provided a. lever 79 which is pivoted as at 80 and carries a pawl 78. This pawl engages a ratchet 73 mounted upon a shaft 76, this mechanism being duplicated at each end of the display opening. Prior to the end of travel of plate 53 the latter engages the free end of the lever 7 9, so as to move the sprocket 7 3 a distance termined period whereupon, the sheets or of one tooth, this movement being suflicient to bring the next advertising sheet or curtain into position for engagement with'thehooks of the plate 53. The movement of the lever 79 is resisted by a spring 82, while the lever in one direction.
56 the latter being adapted to a stop 81 serves to limit the movement of a pair of spaced collars 60. When the chain 51 reaches the end of its movement, the lug 56 will engage one ofthe lugs 57 to cause one. of the collars 60 to move into engagement with the lever 61,which is secured to a shaft I 62. This shaft is provided'wit'h a lug or finger 63 which engages a groove inzthehub of the gear 32, shifting the said gear to a neutral position between the clutch member 46 and. the clutch member of the beveled pinion 55, thereby, causing a pause or tarry n the operation of the mechanism and leavmg the sheets or'curtains atrest before'the display opening. for a predetermined length of time, or until the operation of the shift ing levers 44 moves the gear 32 into, engagement with one of the clutch members The main power shaft 28 also has secured thereon a gear 83, which engages a gear 84, loosely mounted upon a counter shaft 85 the latter operating in bearings 86 secured to the base of the cabinet. The gear 84 is provided upon each face with an ex-' tended hub, to provide a ratchet member,"
the latter being adapted to'engage a ratchet member formed on the hub of a bevel gear 146 which is loose on the shaft 85 and a ratchet member150 fastupon said'shaft.
A hand wheel 24 is secured upon the upper;
end of a short vertical shaft 87, which'is operated in bearings carried by the frame and at the lower end of theshaft 87 is a bev' eled gear 88. gear 89, which is provided at its rear with This gear engages a bevel an extended'hub 89 and extending-from the opposite face of this "gear is'a sleeve 89". This sleeve has securedupon its outer end a drum 89, which carries a segmental lug 90. The gear 89 is mounted upon the shaft'96,
which is mounted in bearing 91 locatedwithin the." cabinet. A ratchet wheel 92 is secured to the shaft 87 ofthe hand wheel,
- the said ratchet being engaged'by a dog 93,
which is 'pivotally mounted as indicated at 94 and is held in yielding engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 92 by meansof spring 95. The shaft 96carries atone end a collar 97 which is fast thereon and secured to this collar ,is one. end of a'coil spring, the opposite end of this springbeing secured to the hub of the bevel ear 89 p which is loose upon the shaft. 1\ ounted j upon the shaft 96 is a gear 99, one face of which carries a segmental lug 100, which isad'aptedtolengage the lug 'of the drum 89." The gear 99 meshes with the pinion 101, which is secured-to the shaft 102, the q latter being operated in bearing 103. The
shaft. 102%. alsohas secured thereon sprocket wheels 104, over which operate chains 105 and 105?, similar in construction to 64 and 64 described in connection with the advertising mechanism. The chains 105 and 105" are adapted to carry sheets or curtains 200, whichare adapted to have imprinted thereon. suitable indicia, for example, sections of a business or city directory. These sheets or curtains may be alphabetically arranged andithe index 23 upon the table or shelf 23 may correspond to the arrangement of the. information sheets or rolls 200. Thus, if it is desired to ascertain the location of a person or building, the particular letter under which the person or building would be classified, would be the point at which the indicator is adjusted for the operation of the information mechanism, so as to cause the particular sheet selected to appear before the display panel 19, as will be hereinafter apparent.
The chains 105 and105 pass over idle sprocket wheels 107, which are mounted upon shafts 108and as before stated, these chains carry the spring controlled information sheets or curtains 200, which are similar to. the sheets or, curtains 67 and like these sheets or curtains carry rods 201. These rods are engaged by hooks secured to a. carrying plate 109, the said plate being similar to the plate 53, except that the rod en gaging hooks 202 are located only along the bottom edge of the plate: and while the plate 53 moves in a horizontal direction the plate 109 moves vertically. This last named plate travels in metal guides 109 which are secured upon posts 110, the saidplate being secured to chains 111, which pass over sprocket wheels 112 secured to the shaft 113, the latter operating in bearings 114. The chains 111 are driven by sprocket wheels 115, which are secured toa shaft 116, which operates in bearings 117 mounted upon the base of the cabinet. The shaft 116 is driven by beveled gear 118, which is in turn driven by beveled gear 119 secured to one end of a shaft120. This shaft is supported in bearings 121 and is driven by a bevel gear 122,
the latter engaging the beveled pinion 146 which is loose on the shaft 85 and bevel pinion 151 fast on said shaft. The hub of the gear 84 is engaged by one end of a lever 144, which ispivotally mounted as shown at 145. The opposite end of-this lever engages a cam groove 143*, provided, in a collar 143 mounted upon a shaft 141. This cam is illustrated in Figure 29 of the drawings. The shaft 141 carries a gear 140, which engages thepinion. 138 mounted upon the shaft 137,
upon a pivot 126 carried by the frame and to the opposite end of the said lever there is pivotally secured one end of a connecting rod 127. The opposite end ofthis rod is connected to one arm of the bell crank 128 the other arm of the bell crank having secured thereto one end of the connecting rodv 129, which is in turn connected to a lever 130 secured upon the shaft 131. This shaft is supported inbearings 132 and has mounted thereon a shifting finger 133, which engages a groove in the sleeve 134 having a clutch at one end thereof. This sleeve is slidably mounted upon. the main drive shaft 28, with j which it rotates and when the said sleeve engages the toothed hub of a pinion. 135, which is loose on the shaft 28 it willdrive the said pinion to operate the gear 136.
After the indicator has been properly set for the information sheet or curtain requiredv the knob 25 is pressed downward so as to shift the clutch 134 through the shaft 131 and the finger 133 just described. This will cause the clutch 134 to rotate the gear 1335 upon the main drive shaft 28-and operate the gear 136 and the gear 140. This will 7 operate the cam'143, which shifts the lever 144, forcing the gear 84 to the right of Figure 6 of the drawings so as to engage the hub of the bevel pinion 146, this rotates the gear 122 in one direction, causing the carrier plate 109 to descend and return the information sheet previously selected. After delivering the sheet, the plate 109 strikes a locking bar 147, which has one end pivoted to the end of the shaft 96 and the other end held by a spring 148. This locking bar is provided with-teeth or projections 147 that fit into the gear 149 secured to the shaft 102. When the locking bar147 releases the gear 149, the shaft 102 will be revolved by the tension of the gear spring 98 to bring the desired roll into position so that the rod carried by the roll may be engaged by the hooks of the plate 109. The lever 144 will then have been operated to move the gear 84 to neutral position. The said lever is then shifted from the cam to opposite or left side of the clutch and engaged with the clutch member 150, which is secured to the shaft 85. This shaft has secured thereon a beveled pinion 151 which meshes with the gear 122. and operates the latter in a reverse direction "and causes the carrier plate 109 to. ascend and carry the information sheet or curtain to a position overthe display opening 19. hen the carrier plate 109 ascends, the bar 147 engages the gear 149 and holds the information mechanism in position. an appreciable period before moving -it When at its highest point, the bar 109 is yieldingly held by a spring clip 203 or other desired means and the gear 84 is moved to a neutral position. Mounted upon the shaft 131 is a pawl 152, which is engaged by a lever 153, supported upon a pin 154, the
leverl53 being held in position by a spring 155. A pinl-56 carried by the lever 153, is engaged by' a pin 156 secured to the gear 140. This releases the pawl 152 and throws '-motor 26 supplies power for the operation of the mechanism, the advertising mech the clutch 184 in neutral positionand stops the information mechanism, On the connecting rod 127, is a'collar 158, having a pin A 158 ,the latter fitting into onearm of the bell crank 159. The'other arm of the bell crank engages a locking bar 160 pivoted at one end to the frame as at 161, the said bar having a spring 162 secured at its other end. This locking'bar has teeth 160 which fit into the gear 163 on the shaft 87 thereby holding the hand wheel 24 with its pointer locked as long as the mechanism of the information sheets or curtains is in operation.
-Loca'ted within the upper" end of the cabinet, is a source of light, preferably in the form of an incandescent lamp 205. Th s lamp, is connectedwith any suitable source of electric current and is included in a air cuit, in which-there is also included a pair of stationary contacts 206. One of these stationary contacts is located at each end of the display opening 20 and is adapted to be engaged by a movable contact 207, which is carried by each of the levers 79 whlch operate the ratchet for moving the advertising rolls step by step. It will be thus seen that when the carrying plate 53 engages the end of the lever 7 9 at the end of its travel, the said lever will close the contacts 206 and 207 at that end of the cabinet and light the lamp 205, which will remain llghted during the pause of the advertising sheet or ourtain. Upon the return movement of the plate 53, the contacts will be broken and the lamp extinguished, remaining in such condition until the clrcuit is closed by contacts 206 and 207 upon the opposite side of the cabinet. Thus, an intermittentlighting and extinguishing of the lamp 205 is efi'ected.
